The gold standard issue would be kind of interesting, since I usually think of that as more of a lunatic fringe issue (whereas obsessions with socialism or advocating Christian-centric dates strike me as more normal habits of conservative activists).

I have to guess because people don't fact-check emails which are forwarded to them, under the assumption that their friends and family would not send something which is false. If someone agrees with the sentiment expressed by the email, then I suspect it's even less likely that it will be checked.

I find this one especially amazing given that Professor Olson has been trying to kill the misattribution since 2000; some lies are just incredibly persistent.

The club-you-with-a-metaphor posters drive me nuts. It's such a stupid waste of money to print out a 3x4 placard with a few words or a picture of a dragon representing government run health care or whatever.

If you've ever watched committee hearings, the thing that drives me crazy is the like 5 minutes of welcome/thanks/posturing that goes on for each congresscritter's introduction... usually about how they've been advocating for having this meeting for years, and are so glad the witness(es) could make it, etc.

My problem is that he's making a claim in there that the problem is due to an emphasis on mathandscience, with the suggestion that declines in humanities are an enormous problem while mathandscience isn't suffering. The sciences are running into serious problems, even with the money-- pointing over at the engineering school and saying "it's all your fault" is counterproductive.

I think I agree with Slouka's assessment that the money in higher education is one of the driving sources of the problem (in particular, schools seeing themselves as practically for-profit intellectual property generating institutions). I also agree that, at least in my slice of the technical field, a person with a broad background is much better than someone who is only about "pure" mathandscience.

My thinking in this vein keeps coming back to a desire to implement some coarse-grained majors at the high school level. Start to figure out where people are headed earlier on, and emphasize those strengths. While this might feed into Slouka's perceived problem re: emphasis, I think this is more likely to make education on the average pareto positive for most students. Right now, if a student is simply bad at math, they are forced to continue to do it, which in turn ingrains a sense of disgust for educators who "make" you do "stupid" and "hard" stuff. I suppose this runs counter to what I just said about being broadly educated, but there's a balance, and I think emphasizing one's individual skillsets will help make the overall experience better.

Thanks! And that's the thing; if they did this small amount of research (this post took a bit over an hour), I'm sure that Glenn Beck and the others would still find ways to make their points, only stronger. I'm not going to claim that Beck is an idiot, but he does spread crap.

It amazes me that so much internet discussion is so awful; it's never been easier to do the research that would make for well-informed, productive policy and political discussions.

Yeah, I was very pleased-- I think they got it as part of a special event, since they had an evening in which they were tapping a rare Stone every hour. They did the same thing with Dogfish head about a month ago, including the Sahtea, which was amazing.

...they have Stone Vertical on tap?? I've not been to a Flying Saucer in many years, and I'm wishing I had one nearby now. I love Stone's Vertical series. I've got a friend who's holding on to a bottle from each year for the exciting conclusion in December of 2012. I can only hope to join him as I don't have the patience to keep them myself until then.
